BDPA host ‘Cincinnati Information Technology Meetup' to collaborate with the vibrant community of like-minded technology professionals of color in our city.

The doors are wide open for those folks who are passionate about all things technical. Our meetups encourage fun, socializing and high level talks on a variety of technology topics.IT recruiters and IT job seekers are both welcome!

During the 2014 Africa Summit, President Barack Obama stated, “I do not see the countries and peoples of Africa as a world apart; I see Africa as a fundamental part of our interconnected world – partners with America on behalf of the future we want for all of our children. That partnership must be grounded in mutual responsibility and mutual respect.” Although the President was speaking in general terms at the time, what he said applies to the African IT landscape, as well.

To dive deeper into this subject matter and learn about how Africa is tackling the challenge of Information Technology with the rest of the world, we welcome Russell McMahon, Associate Professor of IT at the University of Cincinnati. Russ recently visited several countries in sub-Saharan Africa to perform research on the state of technology and has returned with a wealth of findings that are of interest to anyone who happens to be keeping an eye on the evolution of tech around the world.

In his talk, Russ will examine the Information Technology scene in three different countries (Rwanda, South Africa, and Kenya) and by extension much of Africa. The challenges faced in each of these countries are similar, but each one has its own unique issues. Much of Africa seems to be hedging a bet that information and communications technology (ICT) will be the mechanism that leads their countries and economies into the 21st century. Many of the major computing tech companies are in Africa staking their claim. Each country’s success in becoming the next ICT hub will come down to how well they can train and retain the next generation of IT specialists.

Russ delivered an extremely well-received talk on the History of Technology in the Greater Cincinnati area last year for BDPA. His academic approach and passion for what he studies were very evident and appreciated by the audience.  This promises to be a very informative discussion on a very relevant topic.

BDPA is pleased that Russ will share his expertise and wisdom with BDPA members.  Anyone, regardless of race or color, is welcome to attend!
