An Overview of "Big Data” in Biomedical Research Presentation An overview of "Big Data” in biomedical research and its impact will be given during this presentation from a researcher’s prospective. Datasets from two experiments involving low-throughput and high-throughput platforms will be compared to highlight a case where "Big Data” is used to address a biomedical research problem. Beyond seeing an example of different disciplinary researchers collaborating on a "Big Data” study, participants will also learn about professional opportunities for data scientists in biomedical research. Presenter Shanen Sherrer is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Postdoctoral Research Associate in Dr. Paul Modrich’s laboratory at Duke University. She earned a B.S. in Biochemistry with a minor in Statistical Methods from Miami University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Ohio State University. As a graduate student in Dr. Zucai Suo’s laboratory, Shanen developed expertise in advanced enzymology. Her dissertation research involved determining mutagenic profiles and pre-steady state kinetic changes that arise when error-prone DNA polymerases encounter DNA damages. She also served as the Lab Chemical Safety Officer and Lab Manager for the Suo laboratory while mentoring several undergraduate students. Shanen’s postdoctoral research involves studying the molecular mechanism of the human DNA mismatch repair pathway.
