BDPA members (past, present and future) are invited to join us on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 @ 6:00pm. BDPA hosts Cincinnati Blacks In Technology - http://www.meetup.com/TechLife-Cincinnati/events/106309882/ - Our topic of discussion this month is: Giving IT Back: Volunteerism + Technology
BDPA hosts ‘Cincinnati Blacks In Technology’ to collaborate with the vibrant community of like-minded technology professionals of color in our city. The doors are wide open for those folks who passionate about all things technical. Our meetups encourage fun, socializing and high level talks on a variety of technology topics. IT recruiters and IT job seekers will share information in a face-to-face setting
Volunteerism is part of the American spirit. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010 about 62.8 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once during the year. The past three presidents have all encouraged volunteerism from Bush’s "National and Community Service Act” in 1990 to Obama’s recent signing of "The Serve America Act” which triples the number of AmeriCorps volunteers, a group founded during the Clinton presidency.
Among the millions of volunteers is a new type of volunteer: Tech Volunteers. This new type of volunteer helps others use technology, usually to make organizations efficient and successful through the use of technology. Or to use the skillsets of IT professionals to improve the chances for your nation’s youth to succeed in a STEM-centric future.
Lisa Chambers (Lisa's bio) is our guest speaker for the June 19th meetup of Cincinnati Blacks In Technology. Lisa has dedicated her career to connecting IT professionals with young people through her work at Tech Corps (www.techcorps.org). She has worked with BDPA Cincinnati chapter over the past two years to provide a technology-based curriculum of tutoring and mentoring by IT professionals with 3rd thru 6th graders at both Taft and Kilgour Elementary Schools. We look forward to engaging with all Cincinnati Blacks In Technology attendees about volunteerism opportunities here in the greater Cincinnati area for technology professionals.
The goal for Cincinnati Blacks In Technology is to collaborate with the vibrant community of like-minded technology professionals of color -- innovators and enthusiasts who are working with or interested in Web-based and related technologies. We anticipate that this will also be a hotspot for IT recruiters and IT job seekers to informally share information in a face-to-face setting … learning where the hiring with the Cincinnati IT industry is currently taking place.
We feel this will be an excellent venue to exchange ideas and talk about web technology, innovation, open source, share our knowledge and experience with one another. Tell us how technology is changing the world. Anyone … regardless of race or color … interested in tech is welcome!
