BDPA stresses access at national conference
By Kate
Colborn, Editor in Chief
Diversity/Careers Magazine

National Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA)
returned to its Philadelphia roots in late July for its thirty-second annual
national conference. The society was founded in Philadelphia, PA in 1975, and
had its first national conference in 1979 in Washington, DC. This is the sixth
conference since then held in Philadelphia, the "city of brotherly love and
sisterly affection," which also offers convenient access to eastern U.S. IT
venues.
"Access for all" was the theme of this year's event. "The founders of BDPA
wanted to provide African Americans access to a community where they can grow in
the field of technology," says Yvette Graham, National BDPA president. "Access
was and continues to be the direction of National BDPA for everyone, no matter
how old or how young!"

raffling off over 100 refurbished laptops to students) and our Annual Awards &
Recognition Banquet proved to be a great fundraiser for us as well as an amazing

IT Profession: Peril or Opportunity for African Americans?
Posted by
Don Tennant Jan 2, 2011 11:06:52 PM

I’ve written fairly extensively about African Americans in
IT over the years, not because I claim to have any brilliant insights about the
challenges faced by African Americans in this industry, but because I feel
strongly that the topic warrants a lot more attention than it tends to get. So
when I came across a blog post that lambasted "racism, prejudice and oppression”
not just in IT, but specifically in social networking and cloud computing, my
interest was piqued.

Will there be a jobless recovery for IT in 2011?
Hiring experts line up on both sides of this critical
debate
By
Carolyn Duffy Marsan, Network World
January 03, 2011 06:05 AM ET

That's the most important career-related issue facing IT
executives today, as they make staffing decisions for next year while also
worrying about their own job prospects amid a steady stream of corporate
downsizing and off shoring announcements.
Ask any IT pro who is out of work right now, and the answer
to this question is a resounding yes. They'll point out that more IT
infrastructure and support jobs are being outsourced, and that it's harder than
ever to find full-time employment.
Talk to recruiters and placement firms, and a different
picture emerges. They report a rise in corporate IT shops looking to hire
application developers, project managers and mobile device experts -- if not on
a full-time basis, then at least for short-term projects.
We polled five experts in IT hiring trends, and here's what
they had to say about tech job prospects for 2011.

2011 tech priorities: Are you ready to shake things up?
Six hot technologies that can help reshape
the business and equip employees to do their jobs more efficiently and
effectively
By Network World Staff, Network World
January 03, 2011 12:05 AM ET

Concerns about the economy haven't
evaporated, but companies aren't standing still waiting for a bailout. They're
working to expand their businesses and find new opportunities for growth,
predominantly outside of their current markets.
IT will play a critical role in business
transformations, says Mark McDonald, group vice president for executive programs
at Gartner. "If you're going to change where you operate to include other
countries, if you're going to take your product into adjacent industry markets,
you need technology to give you the scale and connectivity to reach those
markets and work with new customers in an effective way," McDonald says.
We've identified six key areas where IT can
help reshape the business and equip employees to do their jobs more efficiently
and effectively. Are you ready to act?

The job market is improving for African Americans in IT
"The beauty of the IT industry is that it rewards those with skills, talents and creativity." – Wayne Hicks, BETF
By Sonya Stinson, Contributing Editor
When the economy started getting pummeled a few years ago, the IT job market also took some hits, but 2010 may turn out to be its comeback year, says Wayne Hicks, executive director of the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF). "The number of firms that purchased booths for the BDPA career fair in July 2010 is a clear indication that corporate America is looking to hire more IT professionals at all levels," says Hicks. GEEKS GONE GREAT goes One on One with Dr. Randal Pinkett to discuss his new book: BLACK FACES IN WHITE PLACES by Sheila Marionneaux
"Without self-determination and excellence you are not even in the game – you’re on the bench.” -- Dr. Randal Pinkett I first interviewed Dr. Randal Pinkett right after the 2008 NBDPA Technology Conference, held in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Pinkett had delivered a commanding keynote address, which was the talk of the conference (see http://blacksgonegeek.org/DrRandalPinkett.aspx). A dynamic and engaging speaker, I remember his presence as if it were yesterday. We did not have the occasion to meet, but still, there are individuals who leave life long impressions making you feel as though you know them (I imagine like Wendy Williams’ "friends in her head”). Dr. Pinkett’s keynote address revealed his journey’s accomplishments, beginning with how he created his first enterprise as an undergrad and going on to become a Rhodes scholar, attain heights of success in business while being a sought-after motivational speaker, author, community servant, and so on…. I remember the students (and adults) in attendance being so awe-inspired. Having been in the presence of countless celebrities, (never star-struck), I was equally in awe over the opportunity of the one-on-one interview, which continues to result in the highest number of hits at Blacks Gone Geek.org. I am just as honored and excited today for another chat with Dr. Randal Pinkett, to provide our BGG family a unique glimpse into the motivation and work behind Black Faces in White Places. The title is provocative, yes, and without a doubt, is a must-read for African Americans who are climbing the ranks of industry including corporate America, the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, entrepreneurship, education, government, and more. Heads up – Dr. Pinkett isDEEP and he will definitely leave much on your mind! When I consider the vast array of available resources and tools to support an insightful workplace diversity awareness and preparedness perspective, I can’t think of a better book referral for my peers who share ‘Places’… Click here for more: http://blacksgonegeek.org/DrRandalPinkett2.aspx
Careers in IT - Typical Career Path by Milt Haynes Begin with the end in mind – Habit 2, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
When we begin with the end in mind, we have a personal direction to guide our daily activities, without which we will accomplish little toward our own goals. Beginning with the end in mind is part of the process of personal leadership, taking control of our own lives. A career in Information Technology is so varied that we can only begin to outline what is available. I found several charts and career guides on the internet that show some of the more common job titles and career progressions. I’ve posted them on Blacks Gone Geek and I’m hopeful these resources will help you chart a course to your career success. How to Answer the ‘Tell Me About Yourself’ Interview Question
By Lee E. Miller
When I was a human resources executive doing hiring interviews, I almost always began my interviews with candidates by requesting, "Tell me about yourself.” I did that for a number of reasons, the most important of which was to see how the candidates handled themselves in an unstructured situation.
Most candidates find this question to be a particularly difficult one to answer. That is a misplaced view. This question offers an opportunity to describe yourself positively and focus the interview on your strengths. Be prepared to deal with it. These days, it’s unavoidable. Like me, most interviewers start off their interviews with this question. A lot of interviewers open with it as an icebreaker or because they're still getting organized, but they all use it to get a sense of whom you are.

Job Growth Is Likely Next Year. The Question Is: How Much?
The last few months have seen a flurry of economic stimulus measures: The Federal Reserve has begun its purchase of $600 billion in bonds, and Congress has passed -- and President Barack Obama has signed -- a broad extension of tax cuts, including a surprise decision to cut the Social Security withholding tax by 2%. But will any of those measures create enough new jobs to finally get the economy moving?
Among economists, the consensus is that the job outlook will improve very slowly in the first half of 2011.

BDPA Technology Programs are designed to leave a legacy by encouraging a love of technology. Throughout the year, local BDPA chapters conduct technology training programs for the youth in their communities. These programs are designed to expose our youth to the concepts of computers and give them the expertise to develop web applications. Chapters participate in regional competitions throughout the country to further prepare their students for the annual High School Computer Competition held at the National BDPA Conference.
"We know that not enough people are entering careers in Information Technology. BDPA is committed to finding creative ways to ensure that more students develop a love of technology and go on to pursue careers to become the IT professionals and innovators of tomorrow," said Yvette Graham, National BDPA President.
In a recent CRS (Congressional Research Service) Report for Congress, it was confirmed that we need to do even more to introduce our youth to technology and prepare them for technology careers.
There is growing concern that the United States is not preparing a sufficient number of students, teachers, and practitioners in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). A large majority of secondary school students fail to reach proficiency in math and science, and many are taught by teachers lacking adequate subject matter knowledge.
When compared to other nations, the math and science achievement of U.S. pupils and the rate of STEM degree attainment appear inconsistent with a nation considered the world leader in scientific innovation. In a recent international assessment of 15-year-old students, the U.S. ranked 28th in math literacy and 24th in science literacy. Moreover, the U.S. ranks 20th among all nations in the proportion of 24-year-olds who earn degrees in natural science or engineering.
BDPA supports numerous programs targeting younger children, middle school and higher education to encourage young people's interest in careers in technology. These include High School Computer Camp, High School Computer Competition, National Conference Youth Technology Camp, College Scholars Program, College Student Intern Program, National Conference IT Showcase, Mentoring Programs, National BDPA Career Center and Talent Management System, College Student Program, HSCC Alumni Program, Black Family Technology Awareness Week (BFTAW), BDPA Information Technology Institute, BDPA IT Corps, National BDPA Technology Conference, and ITSMF Executive Protégé Program (EPP).
"BDPA Technology Programs have set a good example for our technology education. We need to encourage our students to learn about technology, not just how to use it but how to develop innovative technology solutions too" said Monique Berry, National BDPA President-Elect.

10 Things You Might Be Doing That Could Hurt Your Career
Alan Norton
November 10, 2010

Over the years, I have observed some of my closest friends and associates make mistakes that had a negative impact on their careers. Other mistakes I have discovered for myself. I won't focus here on the obvious gaffes, like insubordination, poor work performance, and other common methods of committing "jobicide." I will instead discuss some of the ways you might be unknowingly hurting your career.
1. Portraying the Wrong Image
2. Asking When You Should Have Been Silent
3. Failing To Be a Team Player
4. Acting Unprofessionally
5. Working with Friends or Relatives
6. Being Unprepared
7. Being Unavailable
8. Not Using/Improperly Using Networking Opportunities
9. Lacking Ambition
10. Using Company Assets for Personal Gain

Tablet PC + PowerPoint = Productivity
by Ricardo Wilkens at RixBits

Likemany others, I patiently await the delivery of my new HP Slate 500 tablet PC. Having been along-time fan of tablets, this latest incarnation is especially exciting.
As I started thinking about how I would fit this new device intomy SharePoint Consultant toolbox, I started thinking about some of the ways that I've used my old tablet PCs in the past. One particularly useful technique I've used is to do quick drafts of my SharePoint presentations using handwriting on my tablet. Those who've never used a Tablet PC might respond, "why not just write it out on paper?” (sigh…) Paper is dead. :) Plus, there are other advantages to the tablet. Among them is the ability to distribute my handwritten slides electronically to others for feedback or collaboration. Not to mention being able to add images, side notes, etc to my slides, as well as re-ordering the deck on the fly.

Why IT Jobs Are Never Coming Back
By Stephanie Overby
Thu, December 09, 2010

U.S. IT job loss may level off in coming years, but the likelihood that corporate IT will ever contribute to job creation again is minimal, according to a recent study by the Hackett Group. CIO.com talked to Hackett's lead researchers about what's driving IT jobs offshore, what roles will remain stateside, and why some American IT professionals may have to send their resumes to China.

Standish Group survey results show IT spending is on the rise for 2011 The latest Standish Group survey results show IT spending is on the rise for 2011. Areas of strength include general hardware, software and services. For example 24% of organizations plan to spend more on hardware in 2011, than in 2010. IT Job Seeker Survey Results - Analysis Report Now Available

In October 2010 we asked job seekers to take a short
3-minute online survey to let us know how we could help them. The main objective
of the survey was to obtain feedback that we could use to assist job seekers.
This information not only provides a resource to meet our needs, it measures the
effectiveness of our services along with suggestions for improvements. The
survey contained Eight (8) questions. The total sample size for this survey
consisted of 69 participants.
Many job seekers were looking for us to provide additional
resources that are already available to them now. The question might be how can
they tap into the current services and apply the information to their specific
needs.

5 Steps to a Remarkable Personal Brand Strategy
by Tanya Smith

Personal brand marketing is a solid career management
technique. When you are doing the work to clearly identify your personal brand -
or the overall collection of perceptions that you want others to have about you
- it may not be as simple as jotting down a few notes on a memo pad.
Developing a brand strategy that describes the
irresistible, remarkable YOU can take some work, but once you have it, you can
apply the pieces to everything you communicate - e.g. resume, interview remarks,
online media, etc.

Three BDPA Students Showcase Entrepreneurial Talents with 3D Virtual Integration
of Facebook Called StartLounge

We often talk about BDPA being an organization that
provides programs and services that advance the careers of our members from the
'classroom to the boardroom'. I think that we will find the reality
behind those words in Rochester, MN. That is where three
past national BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) champions have
joined together to create the StartLounge.
StartLounge is a visual, social interface that engages users with
3D-Facebook integration. StartLounge also gives you the power to preview
your Facebook news feeds and pictures that you are tagged in. The
co-founders indicate that the product is still in the development stages and
will be continually updated with cool new features.
The co-founders are student members of our

HSCC Testimonial: Matthew Clark (Detroit, 2008-2010)

BDPA Detroit is a historically strong chapter when it comes to the national high school computer competition (HSCC) championships. In fact, there is only one chapter (Southern Minnesota) with more championships than Detroit. One reason for the success in Motor City is the strong coaches and students in the program. One of the strong students over the past three years (2008-2010) has been Matthew Clark.
Matthew shared his thoughts on his HSCC career with us.

Happy Birthday: George Williams, Past National BDPA President

Please join us in wishing a wonderful birthday to our past national president -- George Williams. I've known George since I first joined BDPA back in the late 1980s. He was a powerful figure in the BDPA Cleveland chapter before he set a record for the longest-tenured national president in BDPA history.

BETF Executive Director Wayne Hicks Voted One of the Top 50 Amazing Tech Tastemakers

I just learned from the folks over at Black Web 2.0 that I'm one of the Top 50 Amazing Tech Tastemakers.
You may recall that we told you about the Top 50 Amazing Tech Tastemakers campaign a few weeks ago. Since then a number of you took the time to cast your vote on who you think should be a Top 50 Tech Tastemaker and the results and activity have been both interesting and exciting to watch. The voting ended yesterday and we ended up as #25 on the list!

Bemley Scholar Caroline Tremain Heads to University of Minnesota

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) has given out over $318,000 in scholarships to more than 150 students since 1999. One of those talented scholarship students is Caroline Tremain. She was a member of the 2006 high school computer competition (HSCC) team trained by BDPA Southern Minnesota chapter. Her team took home the silver medal in the 2006 national HSCC championships held in Los Angeles CA. As a result, Carly earned a Jesse Bemley Scholarship.

THE POWER OF THANK YOU
by BDPA Detroit TAC
In the spirit of Thanksgiving I'd love to share with you the benefits and power of two simple words. THANK YOU.
They are two words that have the power to transform our health, happiness, athletic performance and success. Research shows that grateful people are happier and more likely to maintain good friendships. A state of gratitude, according to research by the Institute of HeartMath, also improves the heart's rhythmic functioning, which helps us to reduce stress, think more clearly under pressure and heal physically. It's actually physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time. When you are grateful you flood your body and brain with emotions and endorphins that uplift and energize you rather than the stress hormones that drain you.

eWeek.com: IT Management: Non-Certified Technology Skills: the Top 25 Right Now
By Don E. Sears on 2010-11-12

There’s no secret in the formula: For the most part, the more IT skills you have, the better pay you get. The following alphabetical gallery lists the top 25 skills in technology with increased demand in pay for the third quarter. These are non-certified skills, meaning they don’t necessarily require a technology worker to have a certification, yet they do require experience. These skills were sourced by Foote Partners, a Vero Beach, Fla., technology research company that tracks certified and non-certified IT skills.

Why Have You Been Out of Work So Long?

Whatever you do, have an answer to the question — why have you been out of work so long? Whatever you say, don't answer, 'Looking for a job.'

BETF Scholarship Winners (2009-2010)

Chris Johnson is chair of the BDPA Foundation Scholarship Committee. He shared an update with the Foundation's board of directors on recent scholarship funds sent to post-secondary educational institutions around the country on the behalf of deserving BDPA student members.

Can BDPA Expand SITES Program to Elementary School Students With Tech Corps?

I drove out to Columbus Ohio today in order to meet with Lisa Chambers, Tech Corps Ohio state director. BDPA Columbus chapter member Andre Young joined us in a discussion about possible strategic alliance with Tech Corps on local and national level.
Lisa shared with me the 15+ years of history for Tech Corps. The group was founded in 1995 by Gary Beach, Publisher Emeritus of CIO Magazine. Tech Corps is committed to enhancing K-12 education through the effective use of technology by recruiting, placing and supporting volunteers and by developing partnerships between schools and the community.

ITSMF: Executive Protege Program

I spent eight years in the Senior Executive Service (SES) with the federal government before striking out to start my own company. It is difficult to travel a career path in the information technology (IT) industry through the glass ceiling to the executive level.
One way to make that journey is with the help of a mentor. As such, I can sincerely recommend that any African American IT professional that is currently in a management position ... who feels that (s)he has executive potential should take a moment to learn about the Executive Protege Program (EPP) offered by the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF).

Summer Program for High School Students: Science and Engineering Apprenticeship with US Navy

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) is working with others to create a powerful strategic alliance in 2011 with the Department of Navy. One way that we can help is to raise awareness of Navy programs that would be of interest to BDPA student members.
For example, do you know a high school student who is interested in science and engineering and is looking for an apprenticeship next summer? If so, please let him or her know about the 2011 Science and Engineering Apprenticeship (SEAP) Program.

There are a growing number of BDPA chapters with Twitter accounts. These are local BDPA chapters that wish to reach out to all current, former and future members via the Twitter network. I encourage any BDPA members on Twitter to take a moment to follow their local chapter as shown on the following list.

Buy a Book Once. Read It Everywhere
from Where are are Blacks in Technology?
by Kai Ajala Dupe

I love to learn. I consider myself a lifelong learner. This is why I love to read. I feel that I can learn anything if I can get my hands on a book. In my opinion, the day you stop learning is the day you die.
Most of what I read has to do with personal development since I intend to continue to improve myself as long as I am on the planet. My goal is to be the best Kai Dupé that I can be before my time is done. The idea that people who continue to learn are the most successful has been documented for many years.

Mastering the technology of the Mind
from Where Are Blacks In Technology? by Kai Ajala Dupé
Recent research by Jane Margolis and Mark Warschauer regarding why certain groups are under-represented in computing suggests that it is a social issue as much as it is an access issue. Much has been written regarding the achievement gap between African Americans and their counterparts.
In virtually every metric of educational achievement African Americans are behind. In this knowledge-based economy, this concern has moved forward with concerns regarding digital equity, and the digital divide, the gap between African Americans and their contemporaries in terms of adoption of technology.
