Take Five: Osedra Siler (BDPA Indianapolis)

Osedra Siler is a multi-talented IT professional currently employed by Eli Lilly & Company. Her skill sets include: Process Improvement, Change Management, Service Management, Project Management, Business Integration, Disaster Recovery testing and Security Access Management. She graduated in 2007 with a Information Systems degree from Florida A&M University.

I know Osedra has a passionate advocate for BDPA Indianapolis chapter ... particularly the youth education programs. She has worked for the past few years on the STEM-based training that the chapter provides to high school students.

Osedra agreed to participate in our ongoing 'Take Five' interview series.

Take Five: Danielle Cauthen (BDPA New York)

Danielle Cauthen works as a web developer for a major corporation during the day. She is also completing her studies to earn a Computer Systems Engineer degree from Columbia University. Danielle is familiar to me because of her tireless volunteer efforts with BDPA New York chapter. I don't think that there has been a chapter event over the past few years that Danielle hasn't supported in one way or another. The most tangible evidence of her talents within BDPA shows in the work she has done over the past three years with HUMANWARE, the chapter's nationally-recognized newsletter.

It seemed only natural that we would seek Danielle out to participate in our ongoing 'Take Five' interview series.

Fundraising Tip: Stage a Board Member Thank-a-Thon

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) is no different than any other nonprofit when it comes to fundraising. It is something that must be done constantly ... and it's hard to do! As such we thought it would be good to begin to share some fundraising tips.

Here is a tip on how to get your board more involved in fundraising:

Top IT jobs in demand in 2011-Q1 - A market report of technology careers

Ashburn VA, April 06, 2011: This market report of the IT jobs in the first quarter of 2011 is created based on the jobs posted in Corp-corp.com during this period and it shows some detailed statistics regarding the IT job market. The graph that shows the percentage of IT jobs posted every month in Q1, 2011 reveals the trending of the jobs in information technology.

The percentage of the IT jobs in the Q1, 2011 has been as follows: 18.1 % in January, 16.2% in February and 20.2% in March. These stats show that the demand for IT professionals has been increasing, as it had always been in the previous years.

New college grads doing better at the pay window

By Paul McNamara on Fri, 07/08/11 - 2:10pm.

Survey shows average starting salaries up 4.8 percent.

Of course, many a recent college grad would be unfamiliar with the concept of a pay window, but that's neither here nor there.

According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), starting salaries being offered to this year's college graduates are up 4.8 percent over this time last year.

Those with computer science degrees are doing just fine, too, although a shade less well than their counterparts in other disciplines.

CIO Magazine - 7 Ways Job Seekers Self-Destruct

– Meridith Levinson, CIO

The IT job market is improving, and CIOs are once again looking to hire permanent, full-time IT staff. But because the labor market is saturated with IT pros looking for work, IT hiring managers are being choosey, say IT staffing industry experts.

Make one mistake on your résumé, and you can forget about being called for an interview. Fail to impress during the job interview, and the hiring manager may cut your meeting short. Go dark on a prospective employer after a job interview, and you can kiss your chances of getting a job offer good-bye. Yes, my friends, the stakes are that high.

IT certifications have lost their pricing power

Foote Partners provides the industry's most unique and up-to-date benchmark research on IT salaries and skills/certifications pay and market demand.

IT certifications have lost their pricing power. Foote Partners reports that pay premiums for certifications are at their lowest point in 12 years, while non-certified skills are commanding more money. The IT Skills and Certifications Pay Index for the first quarter of 2011 shows 252 noncertified IT skills garnering a fifth consecutive pay gain, while 231 certifications saw declines again. "Being able to execute, work well as a member of a team, and prove that you have what it takes to get stuff done is what organizations covet most in their workers,” says David Foote, Foote Partners' CEO and Chief Research Officer. "There are hundreds of skills that may not have certifications that are valued more highly by employers. If there is a choice between a worker with demonstrated experience or a person who is less experienced but holds a certification in the same skill, employers are choosing the experienced person and paying a premium for that experience. Ideally they'd probably like to have both.”

Bemley Scholar Nia Love Heads to Valdosta State University

BDPA Atlanta chapter had its greatest finish in the National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championships back in 2008. The members of that team came in fifth place and earned Jesse Bemley Scholarships.

One of the talented members of that team was Nia Love. She is a multi-dimensional graduate who played basketball, golf and softball at Mt. Zion High School in Atlanta GA. She plans to use her Bemley Scholarship to study criminal justice at Valdosta State University.

Nia shared thoughts about her BDPA experiences:

HSCC Testimonial: Naomi Matthews (Washington DC, 2010)

Naomi Matthews was a member of the HSCC team trained by BDPA Washington DC chapter that earned a silver medal at the 2010 National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Championship held in Philadelphia. In the process Naomi also earned a Jesse Bemley Scholarship which she plans to use to study computer science in college.

What Does the Invisible Thought Bubble From Your Members Say?

Have you ever wondered what your members are thinking? Remember the 'invisible thought bubbles' that are drawn about the heads of your cartoon heroes? Ever wonder about the 'invisible thought bubbles' running over the heads of your chapter members? Perhaps they are thinking about things without telling you.

President Profile: Toni Love (BDPA St. Louis)

BDPA St. Louis chapter was founded in January 1989. It is a chapter for which we have very little documented history. One thing we do know is that the chapter has done very well over the past few years under the leadership of its current president -- Toni Love.

Toni has been a BDPA member for over 20 years. She served as president of the BDPA St. Louis chapter since 2009. Under her leadership the chapter has been very active with program meetings, youth education programs and annual banquets to honor its members, students and volunteers. Toni works closely with the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) to raise scholarship funds for the student members in her chapter.

Gregory Morrison- BDPA Epsilon Award Winner

Gregory Morrison, senior vice president and chief information officer, Cox Enterprises is the winner of the 2011 Epsilon Career Achievement Award presented by National BDPA.

BDPA Epsilon Awards recognize individual achievement by technologists who are nominated by BDPA chapters or corporate sponsors.

http://betf.blogspot.com/2011/07/gregory-morrison-career-achievement.html

BDPA Legacy: Wesley Williams (BDPA Atlanta)

BDPA created the High School Computer Competition (HSCC) over 25 years ago. There have been thousands of students taking part in regional and national championships since that time. There have been hundreds of HSCC coordinators and volunteer instructors. However, there may be only one person who has participated in the HSCC for as long or as well as its founder, Dr. Jesse Bemley. That person is Wesley Williams.

Wesley Williams has been a proud member of the BDPA organization since 2001. His membership originated with the Memphis chapter, as a student in the HSCC program. He worked his way up through the rank to become a member of the Memphis HSCC team. In fact, Wesley was part of the first-ever HSCC championship won by BDPA Memphis chapter.

Grant Recipient: BDPA Los Angeles ($5,141)

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) works hard to raise money to support BDPA programs and services around the nation. One of the local chapters that works hand-in-glove with BETF over the past few years has been BDPA Los Angeles. This year is no exception.

That is why it feels good to announce that BETF approved a $5,141 funding request from BDPA Los Angeles chapter president John Malonson and chapter VP-Finance David Malonson. The Malonson brothers indicate that the funding will be used to provide airfare, lodging and registration for the chapter's national high school computer competition (HSCC) team.

BDPA HSCC Testimonial: Darryl Davis (Atlanta, 2008-2010)

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation awarded over $347,000 in college scholarships since 1999. One of our scholars is Darryl Davis. Darryl earned a Jesse Bemley Scholarship as a result of the high performance by him and his BDPA Atlanta teammates during the 2008 National High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Championship.

Darryl shared his thoughts on BDPA with us in the following testimonial:

My experience with BDPA has been an emotionally, physically and mentally trying experience for each of the three years I was actively apart of the program. To this day I am amazed at how much I've changed since being a young, naive freshman to a mature high school graduate. I went into the program not knowing anything about programming, public speaking or teamwork, but each of those skills grew in me over the three years.

BDPA HSCC Testimonial: James Gadsden (Philadelphia, 2007-2009)

BDPA Philadelphia chapter has been part of the Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) program for over 20 years. Over 100 high school students have gone through the program. One of those students is James Gadsden. James was part of the Philadelphia chapter teams that competed for the National BDPA HSCC Championship in 2007 (Washington DC), 2008 (Atlanta) and 2009 (Raleigh).

James shared his thoughts on BDPA with us:

National BDPA Call to Action!

CALL TO ACTION CALL TO ACTION CALL TO ACTION CALL TO ACTION

BDPA MEMBERS

At the 2010 National BDPA Technology Conference, member delegates endorsed the recommendation of the National Board of Directors (NBOD) to implement a regional organizational structure effective January 1, 2012.

This decision will usher in fresh, new leadership, collaboration and execution of National BDPA strategies and will require our members to "step up” and nominate or become candidates for the Regional Vice-President or Director roles.

At the May 2011 NBOD meeting, nominations for the eight (8) regional positions were reviewed and it was concluded that we only had one (1) nomination. Given this reality, the NBOD commissioned a team to create and execute a plan that would re-acquaint membership with the Regionalization plan. In doing so, the expectation is that we could increase the number of nominations by July 8, 2011.

During the week of June 27, several meetings will occur to increase awareness and inspire membership to consider how they can partner with and support National BDPA as we transition to our new organizational structure.

The 6 Hottest New Jobs in IT

By Robert Strohmeyer – CIO Magazine

IT job seekers have real reason to hope. No fewer than 10,000 IT jobs were added to payrolls in May alone, according to the Bureau of Labor statistics, reflecting a steady month-over-month increase since January. And in a June survey by the IT jobs site Dice.com, 65 percent of hiring managers and recruiters said they will hire more tech professionals in the second half of 2011 than in the previous six months.

But which jobs have the greatest growth potential -- and stand the best chance of withstanding outsourcing or another economic downturn?

To find those hottest of hot jobs, we've scoured listings on IT hiring sites like Dice and Modis and talked with IT execs about the skills they're looking for in the year to come. Our sources point to a cluster of new job titles created to make IT more agile, more social -- and more tightly intertwined with business.

Our results are not scientific. The six job titles you see here have actually been listed, but we didn't choose them based on frequency of appearance or random sample polling. Instead, we picked them because we think they answer the real needs of businesses that want to prepare for the future.

1. Business architect

2. Data scientist

3. Social media architect

4. Mobile technology expert

5. Enterprise mobile developer

6. Cloud architect

LinkedIn For Co-eds

Posted by Martin Lindsey

Hi there college students. Welcome home for summer break. Hope your semesters/quarters/trimesters were fruitful and that you learned a lot. So what are you doing with yourselves until next fall? Hanging out? Traveling? Looking for work?

Now is the perfect time tocreate your professional online persona on LinkedIn. More than just an online resume it is the first place recruiters go to search for talent. Human resource departments are using paper resumes less and less every day. You can keep it updated for those that still request a traditional resume but definitely transfer it to this online portal. This is important because there's always a chance that an employer will find you online first during a time when they're not visiting your campus for interviews. So who knows? Its possible that you could even bypass your campus' career development department for an opportunity.

Game-changing tool for entrepreneurs coming soon

Posted by Ricardo Wilkins on 25 Jun 2011

I recently had an article published at IT Martini where I discuss the upcoming release of Office 365, Microsoft's latest cloud-based services offering, and the value that the SharePoint component of that offering has for entrepreneurs and businesses trying to make use of SharePoint for collaboration.

While my focus in the article was on SharePoint specifically, entrepreneurs and small businesses should also be very excited at the opportunities and cost-savings that this offering could present to them. I spoke recently with a local non-profit organization, and helped them to see potential value in the following areas:

Get Inky With It

by Kai Dupe

Inky-Apps is one of Americas first webstores dedicated to the promotion, advertisement and development of mobile applications for the undeveloped and undiscovered mobile markets. The site was created by Richard Fields, a true African American technology pioneer.

If you are unfamiliar with Richard's story and his mission I interviewed him recently on two separate occasions on my BlogTalkRadio Show. You can find those on-demand episodes here. Inky-Apps is looking for college interns with experience in Android programming.

Philadelphia Neighborhoods: Tea Attracts a New Audience With Local Shop. Assistant vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia is a far cry from running a small business focused on organic tea. Howard James, the owner and operator of Tea Country, saw an opportunity to make the leap from corporate America to small business proprietor. After an MBA project at Eastern University steered him in the direction of fine loose-leaf teas, his passion grew for the product. Although information technology is vastly different from brewing green tea, Howard's love for his work in both fields has contributed to his success.

Technology & my international midnight presentation

Posted by Ricardo Wilkins on 25 Jun 2011

I just finished giving a presentation via Live Meeting for an event based out of India. Start time: 3:30AM EST. I'm so glad that someone invented coffee :)

I think it's very kool, tho, to have lived long enough to see a world where people all over the planet

can have a community event with people from other countries, and do so effectively with relatively little effort, thanx to technology. Live Meeting did a great job of easily letting people from India, Australia, and South Africa join my presentation by simply clicking a web link. Once in the meeting, they were able to see my slides in real-time, streamed from the desk in my home office. The organizer in Australia was able to send me a text message to my phone to remind me that my presentation time was approaching. And of course, the party continued in the social media space, as we all used tools like Twitter (some right from their phones) to communicate with each other using the #SPSIndia hashtag.

Although I'm pretty sleepy {as I yawn one more time}, I'm glad I was able to participate – great experience.

BDPA Detroit Chapter Wins 2011 Midwest Regional HSCC Championship

In the new global economy, America needs a workforce with the knowledge and skills to compete. A new workforce of problem solvers, innovators and inventors who are self-reliant and able to think logically is one of the crucial foundations that drive innovation capacity in the nation. A key to developing these skills is strengthening science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competencies in every student and worker.

Are Blacks More Likely Than Whites to Support Causes Online?

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) has established a number of online fundraisers via social networks in the past few years. As such we were intrigued by a new survey that claims ethnicity is a factor in how people perceive charitable and political causes they encounter on social networks and whether they go on to get involved with those causes. [SOURCE]

Out of 2,000 participants in the survey, 30 percent of Black adults and 39 percent of Hispanics said they were more likely to support online causes rather than causes they encountered offline; 24 percent of whites said the same.

The study was released by Georgetown University’s Center for Social Impact Communication and Ogilvy PR, a public-relations company.

BDPA HSCC Midwest Regionals 2011

posted by Ricardo Wilkins

Today I'm in Cincinnati at theMidwest Regional Mock Competition for HSCC, supporting our high school student team, and helping to serve as one of the judges during the competition.Regional competitions are a great way for our students to begin to get a feel for what they can expect in the actual national competitionin August.

Aside from a slightly abbreviated time schedule and fewer teams to compete against, the regional mock competition offers a pretty accurate representation of the real thing. The Cincinnati chapter of BDPA put a lot of work into bringing this together, with special thanks going to Cincinnati State Technical and Community Collegefor providing their facilities.

Among the teams represented at this year's Midwest regionals are Columbus, Cincinnati, Detroit, and even Los Angeles (the West Coast did not have a regional event this year, so LA is participating virtually in our competition this year via Skype).

Take Five: Stan Washington (BDPA Chicago)

Entrepreneurs are a key stakeholder group for BDPA on both a local and national level. BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) would love to see more IT entrepreneurs taking a philanthropic interest in BDPA programs and scholarships. As such, we were very happy to learn that Stan Washington agreed to chair BDPA's Entrepreneur Advisory Group.

This special interest group assists BDPA entrepreneurs with programs, policies and opportunities that will allow them to continue to grow both in knowledge and influence. We have a wide-range of entrepreneurs within BDPA ... from those who are in the annual Black Enterprise Top 100 list to those who were forced into business ownership as a result of downsizing or outsourcing in the IT industry.

We were pleased that the Entrepreneur Advisory Group chair, Stan Washington, agreed to participate in our 'Take Five' interview series.

12 Dumb User Mistakes That Will Get You Hacked

by Julius Clark

Ok, I had to write this blog for those people who just won't learn until its too late and one day they get hacked.

  1. Not having Anti-Virus Software installed which does not get automatically updated.
  2. Not having your computer automatically downloading and installing operating system patch updates.
  3. Turning off your computer's firewall.
  4. Not using a strong password at least 8 characters or longer that uses upper & lower case alpha, numeric and special characters.
  5. Clicking on unfamiliar email and web site links.
  6. Allowing other people to use your computer; especially little kids who visit game sites.
  7. Installing unfamiliar applications, games and utilities that you have not researched.
  8. Being tricked to enter your login and ID into an email or website that says they need your login credentials.
  9. Using a public computer and not logging off after you finish using it.
  10. Doing on-line financial transactions on a public computer; you can still use a phone you know to do this with much less risk.
  11. Sharing your login ID and Passwords with other people.
  12. Installing a new device and software and not changing the default out of the box or install login information. Example: login ID: Administrator, admin, 0000 and password.

STEM Education Needs a Makeover

from BDPA Foundation Blog by Wayne Hicks

Faye Anderson lays out a compelling argument for the makeover that needs to take place in science, technology education and math (STEM) education if America hopes to win the future. I encourage you to check out her blog post.

Do you agree with her analysis? What STEM education changes would you like to see made in BDPA at local or national level?

How Google Increased Your Gmail Security

from Clark Thought Leadership by Julius Clark

In January of 2010, Google made HTTPS encryption a default security setting for Gmail users email session via a webpage. (See Link Below)

This was a positive move, because it greatly reduces the risk of someone eavesdropping on your communications with Gmail. Gmail users privacy was increased significantly, which will cause a reduction in personal information breaches.
Note: Now this enhanced security can be defeated if you are using a computer that has malware that can steal your keystrokes or clicking on unfamiliar links on websites and in email that can hijack your computer and use the HTTPS security to protect their misdeeds.

Behind the Scenes of My Interview With Keisha Jordan

Posted by MartyBLOGs

Dare to be different. Change your life with an "actionist” attitude.

Our final project assignment for my DC489 "The Big Picture” class was to interview a person in the field of entertainment. I organized my project by prospecting my LinkedIn connections list for potential interview candidates. I specifically researched some of the artists that I have reached out to via social media and found a couple of candidates with interesting profiles whose careers I wanted to know more about. Senior Art director Keisha Jordan of Common Ground Marketing was one of those who responded.

A couple of things stood out about Keisha. First, her artsy profile picture caught my attention. Instead of a head shot she uses a hand sketch of her face as her profile picture on LinkedIn. That instantly made her stand out from pretty much everyone else on my list (See why you should never leave your profile picture space blank?). It was proof enough to me that she was a serious artist so she was an immediate candidate. The other factor was that we could talk shop about the digital tools we use for our different artistic pursuits. Here’s the interview. Take a look and I’ll continue on the other side.

The Ugly Truth About Jobs

My previous post on Congressman Jessie Jackson Jr's remarks regarding the iPad produced a few very interesting comments. I enjoyed reading them very much and I invite others to join as I think this is the conversation we need to have.

At at time that we are constantly hearing from the Urban League that unemployment among African Americans are at record highs, and that President Obama needs to focus on jobs and job creation we need to understand what job creation means in the 21st century.

Ask Not What The iPad Can Do for You, Ask What You Can Do for The iPad

by Kai Dupe May 15, 2011

Recently Congressman Jessie Jackson Jr. blamed the iPad for American unemployment. Jackson stated the iPad is "probably responsible for eliminating thousand of American jobs." I don't doubt that is a true statement. My response is so. The personal computer is responsible for eliminating thousands of jobs. The same is true of devices such as self-check out kiosks in grocery stores and ATM machines in banks. Cashiers and bank tellers lost their jobs!

This is what technology does. But it is only one side of the equation. Such was also the case during the industrial age and the agricultural age before that. Jackson expanded on his statement by saying "Why do you need to go to Borders anymore? Why do you need to go to Barnes and Noble? Just buy an iPad and download your book, download your newspaper, download your magazine."

Take Five: Ricardo Wilkins (Columbus)

Ricardo Wilkinsis a member of our BDPA Columbus chapter. He has been a frequent workshop presenter at local and national level. Ricardo has been involved with the training of the high school computer competition (HSCC) team that represented Columbus, Ohio in the past few national BDPA HSCC championships. It is worth noting that his team was the most improved last year ... moving up 10 spots in the national rankings from2009to 2010.

We are pleased that Ricardo agreed to participate in ourTake Five interview series.

Malware attack on Mac OS X

Posted by Ricardo Wilkins on21May2011

Recently,Wired Magazine (UK) posted an article regarding a malware attack on the Mac OS X platform. I couldn’t resist commenting on this article, since as many know I've been known tobad mouth Apple productsfrom time to time. :) But this one was particularly interesting because it reminded of a post I wrote about three years ago.

My favorite part of the article says:

It's an urban myth among many that the Apple's OS X operating system is immune, or at least highly resistant, to viruses and malware. In reality that's not necessarily true. Virus creators tend not to target the Mac ecosystem simply because of its low market share in comparison to Windows, and that's changing as OS X becomes more and more popular.
